I’ve always felt the rock band as cultural phenomenon was a classic English invention (Beatles, Stones, Who, Zeppelin, Sex Pistols) while individualistic America was the home of the solo artist (Elvis, Berry, Brown, Franklin, Holly, Dylan, Mitchell, Springsteen, Young, Prince, Jackson, Madonna). With exceptions both ways of course.
