I have the fondest of memories watching both Cabin in the Woods and Midsommar at the Embassy to sold out NZIFF crowds. Love both of the films so much - and for different reasons. CITW was such a crowd pleaser - such a great vibe seeing it with 800 other like-minded fans…I saw Hereditary with some friends who absolutely hated it… ‘so dumb, waste of time’ - I loved it and have enjoyed it on my frequent (solo) rewatches. Can’t wait to see what else Ari Aster has for us!!

I realised reading this that I don’t watch horror films at home or return to them. I do watch them at the movies though. I really enjoyed A Quiet Place and The Invisible Man. I remember being utterly traumatised by Blair Witch Project as a kid. My fave horror film is probably The Babadook. I absolutely loved Midsommer too. I don’t like slashers much. I prefer stuff that fucks with your head a bit.

Sounds like a fun night. Oscar's lucky, I begged my parents to let me watch Nightmare on Elm St at about age 12 and it was a firm no lol. As a grown-up I hadn't found any horror's genuinely scary for years until I watched 'The Witch' and then 'Hereditary' and now I am hesitant to watch any more lol!

I know what you mean about finding it hard to find something frightening on the screen these days. Threat of death and taxes and work never finished has fixed that in most adults I think. Hereditary was a ripper though. And Midsommar. And a good range of new things like The Witch, Babadook, It Follows etc...

Hereditary truly gave me nightmares. Ugh. Such a scary film and such a stupid ending.
