We are rehearsing for the show! Show? What show? Well, I’m glad you asked, annoying narrative technique. See link below!

DICK: Reading ‘Richard’ Live is my first foray into this sort of thing really. I’ve had a few goes at reading with music over the years, and doing improvised music, I’ve even been on the other side, playing for other people reading. But I’ve never built a show, never been the main performer in a reading sense in this way.

We’ve had a couple of rehearsals and I wanted to show a quick clip so people get the idea, and hopefully think hell yeah, I’d see that! Or, Damn, I’m not in Wellington on Friday, February 21, but I know a few people that are and might be interested!

Tickets are $10, and available here

I’m reading material from The Richard Poems but I’ve reordered it, and in some cases performed some small edits, added a tiny bit of brand new, related material, and essentially what we’re doing is telling the very same story-arc, but in a different way entirely. A remix, if you like. I like to think of it that way…

So, a couple more rehearsals to go — and the show is taking shape. It will be live and spontaneous on the night, improvised sections of music that will build on ideas from the rehearsal process, and carry some motifs and (hopefully magic) across. But will be all new and in the moment also — I consider it a type of spontaneous composing. And I’m honoured to be working with Filtersphere — James Gilberd and John Kingston. Brilliant musicians, initiative, empathic, committed to this wholeheartedly, and full of ideas, whilst also respectful of mine, so completely open to collaboration. One could not ask for more.

We certainly hope to give you a hell of a show. I’m very proud of the material and the way we’re delivering it. So this rough and ready clip above is just a wee snippet, but it carries some of the energy we hope to bring.

Copies of the book will be available on the night, of course. Just $20. Or you can get a copy in advance and come to the show knowing some of the story.
