As I said recently, when sharing a review of Reb Fountain, I am a 75% retired music writer. But I do love the chance to write about a gig now and then, gig reviewing was always more exciting and a better challenge for me than reviewing albums. Anyone can write their thoughts about an album, I reckon not everyone can encapsulate a gig - straight after seeing it. I’m not saying I can even do it, I just like the challenge. This week I only felt about 20% retired as I reviewed four shows. My favourite of them - by miles - was Don McGlashan. It was special for a bunch of reasons, not least because the whole family went. My wife’s a huge fan of Don and his songs across all his bands and projects. And we took our son - chiefly because it was cheaper than getting a babysitter! But also because we want him to experience a range of cultural experiences. I’d taken him to see MonoNeon last weekend, so he’s very lucky. Anyway, I feel like we were all very lucky to see such a great band and artist and so many wonderful songs. So I wrote this:
