Poetry Reading: Slam or Be Slammed
This Sunday, Feb 25, a special event at The Undercurrent in Wellington. Come one, come all.
This Sunday, Feb 25, I’m stoked to be part of a poetry line-up taking place at The Undercurrent — a second hand bookstore and venue in the heart of Wellington City (Tory St).
It’s an incredible line-up, based around the visit of Steven Willis, an academic, and internationally recognised slam poet.
To show Steven some love, and to create a space for him to showcase his poetic talents, Slam or Be Slammed will feature a range of performance poets. With some live music too.
It’s the first time reading in public for me in 2-3 years. And I am going to be performing new material, first time read in public, hopefully with a focus on my new “Richard” poems.
It’s KOHA entry and you’ll hear from Steven Willis, Zia Ravenscroft (the youngest performer ever in a NZ poetry slam), Janis Freegard (novelist and poet, and most recently author of the brilliant Reading The Signs), Tamara Tulita (the IIML’s Emerging Pasifika Writer in Residence in 2022), and there’ll be music from singer/songwriter Lore Amore. All that, and a mystery guest or two. Oh, and my nervous first time reading new poems… It’s going to be, as Prince was fond to say, a Beautiful Night. Well, a great afternoon and very early evening.
