Poem: Mercy Killings

The music’s float is forced through the speakers.

Fluttering fantail half caught in the lawn mower.

I kill the volume. Spade across its head.

(When very young I watched my uncle put a bird out of its misery

never thought too much about it).

A new song spreads its wings…
