Joyce Carol Oates says you must read in order to write. She says to read with
focus and reckons if you chose a short novel, like Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea, you could read it in one gulp and the next day you’d be ready to spit out some better
writing than previously; I’ve not done that. More good advice I’m yet to take.
