I always call myself a fairweather Pavement fan. I like them. I feel like I always have. Sometimes I like them a lot, but I had never seen them live; maybe that’s part of my imposter syndrome. Everyone I knew that loved/loves the band talks of a hectic, messy but great live gig, or a stone classic. I had two chances to see them, botched both – was working late one night, and then in the reunion years I chose to see Pixies over Pavement and somewhat regretted it, because the Pixies died for me that night on that stage back in 2010. I’ve barely thought of them, let alone listened to them since.
Well, anyway, I remedied that, and finally got to see Pavement live. It was good too. Mostly really good…
I once called Pavement The Greatest Band of the 1990s and I might even still stand by that – you can make that case still. They existed, as a recording entity, for the 1990s only. Five albums, each of them close to perfect in its way, none of them straying too far from the initial blueprint but all with different things to say, it’s a finite catalogue that still makes sense.
